Case study: Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust

One of the largest, most clinically comprehensive and high quality NHS foundation trusts in the United Kingdom, enjoying an established track record of working successfully internationally for many years. We are able to support international partners through our GSTT Consulting offer.

We use our excellence in clinical services, education and research as the basis for this and offer everything from consultancy services to long term partnerships. We work with governments, international healthcare organisations , the military and industry to provide tailor made solutions to our partners’ requirements. The Trust has a dedicated commercial team and with their clinical colleagues have led projects in many countries across the world. This has included ECMO services in Qatar, quality assurance assessment of German hospitals treating British Military Personnel based in Germany, clinical advice in Dubai, training support for genetic counsellors in Thailand and outreach clinics in Gibraltar. Guy’s and St Thomas’ has worked internationally for many years. Examples of our international work includes:

  • In 2013 the intensive care units of Hamad Medical Corporation formed a partnership with Guy’s and St Thomas’ to develop an ECMO service for patients with severe respiratory failure in the general ICU at Hamad General Hospital (HGH). The creation of a severe respiratory failure centre with the ability to provide ECMO was a significant undertaking within Qatar, requiring investment in equipment as well as staff training and exposure to clinical cases.

  • GSTT provided quality assurance assessment of German hospitals to ensure standards of care for British military personnel based in Germany. We developed a successful Peer Review Assurance Model with an ethos of two way learning, mutual respect and collaboration between clinical consultants to assess and enhance the clinical quality of care provided in a number of German hospitals.
  • In 2020 Guy’s Cancer Academy was approached by Karkinos Healthcare, an Indian start up company, to provide blended cancer education spanning the entire patient pathway throughout their network. Karkinos had identified the fragmented nature of Indian cancer care and education, with many operators both public and private with little inter connection. Karkinos positioned itself to provide a tech led network to help bring together the fragmented provision of cancer care in southern India. This network has been designed to support all aspects of cancer care, including diagnostics, personalised care and R&D. A key element of this network is oncology education provided through a blended platform by Guy’s Cancer Academy in collaboration with Karkinos’ own education and training team.
